Break out the birthday paddle: Google turns 12!
Yes, today marks Google's 12th anniversary. Looking back at all the Google news we've covered since Downloadsquad was founded, it's hard to believe that all the acquisitions, free software, and privacy ... er ... missteps have occurred in only 12 relatively short years.
Google's cake doodle is provided by pop artist Wayne Thibaud, who our friends at Switched point out has rather a thing for painting cakes.
Enjoy your day, Google -- and here's to another year of having no shortage of news about you to report on!
PS: Such an important day for nerd culture deserves something more than Happy Birthday, so I've embedded Weird Al's White and Nerdy after the break.

'Ask an Iraqi leader,' courtesy of YouTube
Filed under: Internet, Google, web 2.0
YouTube, often considered the 'Wild West' of Google's operation, has launched a new series of interviews called 'Iraq Looks Forward.'Conducted by Arabic-language television network Al Arabiya, these interviews will draw from a pool of questions that have been submitted by you and I. You can go ahead and submit a question now -- and vote on other questions! Voting is, as you'd expect, pretty contentious -- but for some reason, even neutral questions like 'When will the new government be formed?', which has 23 thumbs-up votes, has 10 thumbs-down votes. In fact, almost all of the questions have a lot of thumbs-downing...
These questions will be posed to the sitting Prime Minister of Iraq, the Prime Minister of Kurdistan and 'others,' so if you have something important to ask... ask! The deadline is next Monday, September 27.

As far as I can tell, there is no entry in the Guinness Book for amount of data consumed by a person in a month. So I'm creating a very unofficial, tongue-in-cheek, yet highly prestigious and chock full of nerd cred World Record for Data Use on a Mobile Device. The bragging rights go to (the envelope please) jonathanlc2005 from our very own forums, with a total usage for one month of 52.663 Gigabytes!
Be fully aware that jonathan IS paying for the Sprint Hotspot, so before anyone pulls a Kanye and jumps in, do the math -- 52 GB @ $30.00 isn't abusing anything, except maybe Jonathan's wallet. Think you can beat the record? Grab a screen cap of your total data usage for the month, or a pic of the relevant portion of your bill (be sure to edit out any personal info please!) and send it to me. No cheaters, so that means no unofficial WiFi hotspot or tether apps from the Market. We don't want to give the carriers any more ammo to use against us. For now, feel free to head over and congratulate jonathan on his hard work! [Android Central forums]

AOL acquires 5min Media, a video syndication company
Filed under: Business, Video, AOL
While the TechCrunch deal is the most exciting news I've heard from AOL today, it's not the only major deal to go down: This morning AOL announced its purchase of 5min Media, a massive video syndication company.
When you go to the 5min homepage, it looks a bit like a mini-YouTube; that's not the exciting part. What's noteworthy about 5min is that they manually curate all of their content (over 200,000 categorized, tagged and rated videos), and provide technology for automatically embedding relevant videos alongside textual content. So if you've got a blog post about dogs, 5min can automatically place a pet-related video next to your content - possibly something about the exact breed of dog you mentioned.
5min specialized in educational content, and their player shows it: When you switch to full-screen, you get a Tools menu which allows you to advance the video frame-by-frame, change the brightness and even go slo-mo so you can see exactly what's happening. You can play with these features using this random video showing How to Remove the LCD from the 13" Macbook.

Use the Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary to find out what things are called
Everyone knows what a mushroom looks like. But what do you call those fin-looking parts under the cap? You know, those thin, membrane-like things?
That's the type of question you can't really use a regular dictionary for. You might get lucky with Wikipedia, but in this particular case, you won't.
The Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary helps you answer questions like these. It's a large visual index of beautiful, detailed illustrations from fields such as plants and gardening, communications, sports and games, and lots more. Each illustration has a legend, and when you click the word, you also get a short definition. But what's important is that you now know the word, so you can look it up elsewhere.
As far as I know, there's no community-generated visual dictionary (like Wiktionary for regular words). This could be an awesome Wiki-style project, but for now, Merriam-Webster offers one of the best visual dictionaries online, and it's free.
(Oh, and I didn't tell you what that part of the mushroom is called. If you're curious, just click the image and find out for yourself!)
