Gmail launches new Labs feature: Auto advance to next message

gmail

Usually, when you hit Archive (or Delete) while reading a Gmail message, you find yourself back in the message list of whatever label you were reading (the Inbox, for most). However, once you're there, you usually just click the next message to keep on reading and handling your email.

So... why not just move on to the next message automatically? That's just what the Gmail guys thought, and hence this new Labs feature. Sure, you already have keyboard shortcuts that do this -- [ and ] by default -- but most people don't use them. This new setting makes the process automatic, so you don't have to remember any keyboard shortcut. You can also decide whether "next" means "the next newer conversation" or "the next older conversation." Very handy!

OMG/JK: Attack Of The Anthropomorphized Smartphones!

It's finally happened. MG's love for all things Apple has manifested itself in physical form, and he now wears an iPhone to work every day. The doctors say we should try to make him feel like this is normal, so I've taken to donning a matching Android handset. Clashes are frequent ?the hallway leading to TC HQ literally isn't big enough for both of us, and the rest of the team is tasked with making sure we don't push each other's buttons. Or maybe it's just time for a special Halloween edition of OMG/JK. Click through this post to watch the video. This week's topics include the forthcoming Verizon iPhone, which seems to finally be more than just an Apple fanboy's pipe dream. And who could forget the infamous white iPhone ?the chink in Apple's armor that keeps reminding the public that Steve Jobs is not quite omnipotent. We also discuss the company formerly known as UberCab, which is facing a new foe: the City of San Francisco.

Top 30 Android Apps Of All Time

With the ubiquitous media coverage surrounding the iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) app market, it's important to remember that Android also is making huge headway. More than 100,000 apps are now available in the Android Market. Within the last six months, Android devices have reigned supreme, comprising 32 percent of all new smartphone purchases. There is finally a larger selection of models being manufactured and more carriers offering them. When the first Android device launched, I predicted that the OS would surpass iPhone in the coming years. While this looks to be true, those of us involved in the app industry are concerned with something more specific: Who will have the most active app marketplace? Currently, iOS is still the definitive winner. There is not enough app interest on the Android consumer front to warrant a mass exodus just yet. I have a pretty simple metric for determining the potential of an app market: Is PopCap involved? If the answer is no, then the market is still too green. While PopCap has yet to enter the Android space, they have noted plans to port some of their game titles in the coming months. This supports the notion that Android has big potential, but it's still too early. Nevertheless, Android does have serious potential, and there are some fantastic apps already available! Without further ado, here are my top all-time picks for the Android platform, broken down by top free apps, top paid apps, and top games

Video Game Storage ? LevelUp Ottomans

I wouldn’t say that I’m a neat freak, but I like an uncluttered house. That’s not saying that my house isn’t cluttered, because it is… except for my basement. It’s been newly remodeled and is the role model for the rest of the house. If you need a kick start to cleaning up some the [...]

Playboy Goes Non Nude For iPad

Soon the official Playboy iPad App will be revealed but certain other elements won’t be. What we’re trying to say is that in order to follow Apple’s very strict anti-obscenity rules Playboy has agreed to keep their app for the iPad tablet device entirely non-nude and tasteful. With no nudity allowed Playboy may just have [...]

HTC Desire HD vs. EVO 4G... fight!

By now you've probably read our Desire HD review and you've seen how HTC's latest Android flagship stacks up against its Windows Phone 7 sibling, the HD7. But how does it fare against the original Android giant, Sprint's EVO 4G? The devices share common displays (4.3-inch WVGA) and cameras (8 megapixel with dual LED flash) -- but they use different radios (HSPA+ versus CDMA / WiMAX) and processors (first-generation Snapdragon in the EVO, second-gen in the Desire). In fact, the two phones actually have very different personalities when you consider the Desire HD's aluminum unibody case and the EVO 4G's HDMI output and kickstand. Take a look at these mighty beasts side-by-side in our gallery -- along with a video after the break!

Note: In the video we mention that the Desire HD features a front facing camera. This is incorrect.

iPhone users, what do you have to hide?

A couple of months ago, I reported on the Cell Phone Tapper USB Stick from Brickhouse Security. Using this device, it would allow you to get access to information about calls, SMS messages, etc on Symbian, Android, Blackberry or Windows Mobile smartphones. Notice an obvious exception to that list? At the time, there wasn’t a [...]

Facebook Weeks Away From Launching New Games Portal

We are hearing reports that Facebook is weeks away from launching a new, redesigned dedicated gaming portal. Details are sparse at this point, but the portal will present a new, more feature rich way to both find games and play games within the social network. We are told that Facebook will launch the portal with a number of game publishers as partners. With 200 million Facebook users playing games on the site monthly (or 40% of its userbase), it's not surprising that Facebook is ramping up its gaming initiatives. The company alluded to launching a new dashboard at its gaming press event held in September, with the social network's product manager for the games team Jared Morganstern telling the press that there will be a wave of innovation around the dashboard. At that time, Facebook announced changes with gaming applications in relation to the news feed and bookmarks.

Intel, Samsung, Toshiba form consortium aiming for 10nm chips by 2016

There isn't much to say here, so let's just get on with the facts: Intel, Samsung, and Toshiba are joining forces and pooling R&D efforts in a consortium funded in part by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (an expected 50 percent, or 5 billion yen / US $62 million) and the rest from the members. The goal? Semiconductor chips nearing 10nm by 2016. Ten more companies are expected to be invited once things get sorted out, so major chip-related corporations, please keep checking your mailboxes daily.
