Grate That Bar of Soap Like It's a Block of Cheap Cheddar [Concepts]

The designer may cite ecological reasons for eschewing the liquid soap for a bar of soap, but me? I just love the sheer brilliance of this concept. Grated soap! I demand all public toilets fit them immediately. [NathalieStmpfli via Kottke] More »

Facebook now the most-visited website in the world

Hitwise top websites of 2010You hear that, Mr Google? That is the sound of inevitability.

Hitwise has just released two sets of data for 2010: the top 10 most-searched terms, and the top 10 most-visited websites. Rather unsurprisingly, Facebook is at the top of both charts. It leads the most-visited chart by some way, too: almost 9% of all Internet visits in the U.S. were to Facebook, while Google only accounted for 7.2%.

These stats are made all the more insane when you compare them to Hitwise's 2009 figures. In 2009, Facebook only accounted for 4.3% of Internet visits -- it has more than doubled in size and activity. Google, on the other hand, with 6.7% in 2009 has shown a small amount of growth. Yahoo's homepage has stayed the same in 2010, at 3.3%, but Yahoo Mail has slumped significantly from 4.4 to 3.5%, but still ranks as the third-most visited site in 2010.

Facebook is still some way off Microsoft and Google when you factor in all of their properties (Hotmail, Bing, MSN, YouTube), but as a single website, Facebook is now by far the most visited in the world.

The best (or worst) security breaches of 2010

The best (or worst) security breaches of 2010
Very soon now -- probably in a year or two -- once everyone carries a smartphone, there won't be any discernible difference between our offline flesh-and-blood body and our online persona. That's not to say that real-life face-to-face interaction will slither into the abyss -- far from it! -- but we are reaching a stage where almost anything can be done online.

This obviously raises security concerns. If I can transfer money out of my bank account with just a name and password, so can you. That isn't to say that online security is worse than offline, however. SSL-encrypted communications are infinitely more secure than banking over the phone, or speaking in hushed tones in a brick-and-mortar bank. Passwords are a lot more secure than merely providing a 4-digit PIN or a mother's maiden name, too.

The actual problem is databases, or centralized repositories of information. It's no good having a password to your account if a nefarious types hacks a bank and takes all of the accounts. Likewise, putting your bag in a locker doesn't help if someone lifts the entire block of lockers into a truck and drives off.

2010 was a bad year for digital security breaches, and it won't get better until every organization and institution hires a security specialist and puts proper safeguards in place. This post, then, is dedicated to the organizations and institutions that left the barn door open in 2010 -- shame on you!

Samsung's ultrathin 9 Series laptop coming in February

We didn't have a date for Samsung's 9 Series when it became official a couple of days ago, but now we do: it's coming next month. Sammy's press release makes sure to run us through all the bodacious specs of this 13.3-inch machine, including the LED-backlit display with 400 nits of brightness, 128GB SSD, 1.4GHz Core i5-2537M CPU, and MacBook Air-like proportions, before disclosing its arrival month as February 2011. The starting price is still a high and mighty $1,599, but then you do get a pretty stellar laptop for your cash money. Check out the full announcement after the break.

[Thanks, Mario]

Windows Phone 7 January update bringing copy-and-paste, additional minor improvements

While it doesn't sound as though everything rumored to be rolled into the first Windows Phone 7 update, there will be a number of enhancements delivered this month. CEO Steve Ballmer didn't get too specific during his keynote at CES 2011, saying only "Microsoft will release a series of Windows Phone 7 updates over the next few months, including adding the copy-and-paste feature and improving the phone's performance when loading or switching between applications."

Microsoft, however, has now posted an official "sneak peek" at what's on the way. Copy-and-paste is perhaps the biggest addition, though faster application and game launch times will be a welcome improvement as well. Marketplace search has also been tweaked -- tapping your phone's search button post-update will allow you to search the specific category you're currently browsing, rather than the entire Marketplace.

Bigger updates like in-app purchases, expanded APIs, Internet Explorer 9, and Silverlight support won't happen until some time after Mobile World Congress 2011.
